Synagogue Stories: Jewish History of New York
Discover 350-plus years of Jewish life in America and New York City through its storied synagogues in this 8-session DOROT program series presented in partnership with Central Synagogue, SAJ, Congregation Shearith Israel, and the Museum at Eldridge Street.

We start with Shearith Israel, which was established by settlers from Spain and Portugal who came to America in 1654 and is the first Jewish congregation in North America. We will then follow in the footsteps of 19th-century Jewish immigrants virtually visiting synagogues built by Eastern European and German immigrants, including the Eldridge Street Synagogue. From there, we will focus on the diversity of Jewish life and practice in America through virtual tours of SAJ, Hasidic communities in Brooklyn, and recent immigrant congregations that contribute to the vitality of Jewish life and practice today.
